How to get the best road video?

A video showing the journey from point A to point B is probably the simplest video format, as it means that the camera is turned on at one point and turned off at another. At the same time, it offers many possibilities for video additions, especially if the camera has the ability to record other data as well.

Yesterday, on the day of the re-independence of the Republic of Estonia, I tested the solution again, where we drove Estonian card to Tallinn, which was recorded using both the Strava app on the phone and a GoPro camera attached to the bike. I share my experience so that no one else makes the same mistakes.

  • I made the video with my GoPro 11 model. FYI, GPS has been removed from the last 12 GoPro models. In general, perhaps 99% cases, the GoPro does not require GPS to be turned on. However, when making a track video, you should always check that the GPS is on. In case of emergency, GPS data can also be obtained save with some other means
  • In addition to pictures and videos, GoPro also has a separate Time Warp solution. For a track clip, this is easier and better than speeding up a full-length video later.
  • If the journey is longer than half an hour, the camera should definitely be connected to an external battery bank. In advance, it is worth checking whether the battery bank is still capable enough.
  • Filming in 4k format is significantly more energy consuming and can probably cause the camera to overheat. Therefore, I did the last third of the journey in FullHD format, although I could have chosen it from the beginning.
  • The camera must be sufficiently "naked" - GoPro media mod and other bits should be removed from it.
  • You have to start the camera from the side button and then first record after pressing the button, wait until the GPS signal is found.

For some reason, the GoPro Time Warp started shaking properly from Lilleküla Stadium to Pae Bridge. Unfortunately, we still don't know what caused it.

Video montage

The video probably needs some kind of editing because at least the music could be added to it. However, if other data is also stored, then Telemetry Overlay is a really cool program that can add a map, location, speed, height, distance from the start, elevation angle and many other things to the video, perhaps making the video much more informative.

Who is the solution for?

For organizers of sports events, especially cycling and running competitions. Last year I made a video about the Tallinn Marathon course.

For athletes, especially car and motorcycle athletes, who, in addition to reminders of competitions or trainings, can analyze their driving, speed and even accidents.

Skiers, sailors, hobby pilots, drone pilots and many others can document their activities much better with this solution.

If you don't want to buy the Telemetry Overlay program, then send the clip to me and help in putting together the travel video.
